Welcome ------

The Buffalo Orienteering Club invites you to enjoy the Canal Cities Challenge.  Our Middle, Sprint and Long events, at two unique venues, will also include a BBQ picnic and ice cream social. We’ve assembled a wonderful summer “O” experience in upstate New York to rival our well-received 2009 meet. Our two-day event will be the perfect finale to the nine days of the 2011 Canal Cities Orienteering Festival.

Nine Days of Orienteering ------

The Canal Cities Challenge is just part of nine days of the Canal Cities Orienteering Festival in the upstate New York cities of Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo along the Erie Canal.

July 30-31 – The two-day US Classic Championships near Syracuse hosted by the Central New York Orienteering Club.

July 31-August 5 – The Orienteering USA National Convention in Rochester hosted by the Rochester Orienteering Club.

August 6-7 – The Canal Cities Challenge in Sprague Brook and Chestnut Ridge County Parks in western NY hosted by the Buffalo Orienteering Club.

Our Schedule ----------

Friday August 5 – Registration packets will be available for pickup at the Microtel Inn & Suites at 270 S Cascade Dr., Springville, NY 14141 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. This event has been canceled as of Wednesday, August 3rd.

Saturday August 6 – Meet Headquarters location for Registration, Vendors, Middle, Sprint and Picnic is Shelter #1 at Sprague Brook Park, 9674 Foote Road, Glenwood, NY 14069.  It will be open 7:30am to 2:00pm.

Saturday morning August 6Middle Distance event with the first start at 10:00 AM at Sprague Brook Park, a gem of the Erie County Park system with an excellent mix of forested and open rolling terrain. This is a 2007 map drafted and field checked by Valentin Vladimirov of Bulgaria which was used previously for the 2009 Buffalo O Fest Long event. It has a scale of 1:10,000 with 5-meter contours. Meet Headquarters will be in Shelter #1. The start/finish area will be a 1 km walk from the Headquarters and the parking. Results will be posted at the start/finish area.

Saturday early afternoon August 6Sprint event with first start at 2:00 PM at Sprague Brook Park. The Sprint event will be on the south side of the park in an area that is mostly open. The Start and Finish will be adjacent to the Meet Headquarters. The map is a 1:5,000 enlargement of the 1:10,000 map that will be used for the Middle.

Saturday late afternoon August 6 – There will be a catered BBQ picnic (ticket required) in and around Sprague Brook Park Shelter #1 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. The picnic will include an Ice Cream Social hosted by the Rochester Orienteering Club as a fund-raiser for the O-USA Junior Team (additional ticket required). See Picnic section below for details.

Sunday morning August 7 – Long Distance event with first start at 9:00 AM at Chestnut Ridge Park, 6121 Chestnut Ridge Road, Orchard Park, NY 14127. One of the most popular facilities of the Erie County Park system with an excellent mix of forested terrain and scattered picnic areas, the "Ridge" has panoramic views of Lake Erie, the Buffalo city skyline and Buffalo Bills stadium. This area has been used for orienteering for many years but this event will feature the debut of a brand new map produced from an Eddie Bergeron LIDAR and orthophoto basemap. Fieldchecking is scheduled for June 2011 and will be done by Valentin Vladimirov. The map will have a scale of 1:10,000 with a 5 meter contour interval. Meet Headquarters will be in the Casino building directly adjacent to the large main parking lot. The start will be a 500 meter walk from the Casino. The finish will be in front of the Casino. Awards for all three of the weekend's events will be presented at approximately 1:00pm.

Electronic Punching ----------

SportIdent electronic punching will be used on all the competitive courses throughout the event. Competitors must either own an e-card or rent one for $2.00 per event.

Classes & Courses ----------

Complete OUSA class structure will be offered for all three races. The Middle Distance and Long Distance events will have white, yellow, orange, brown, green, red and blue courses. There will be three Sprint courses. Course 1 is for classes that compete on white and yellow courses. Course 2 is for classes that compete on orange, brown and green courses. Course 3 is for classes that compete on red and blue courses. There will also be open classes on each Sprint course. Winning times on Course 1 are expected to be 10 - 12 minutes. On Courses 2 and 3, winning times are expected to be 12 - 15 minutes and the course lengths will be 2 - 3 km.

Non-timed recreational participants may register on Saturday for that afternoon's Sprint and on Sunday morning for White and Yellow courses only.
