Updates ----------

Check this section for periodic updates and additional information. This page was originally posted on August 13, 2012.

August 29: A new section titled "Special Competition Rules" was added.

Welcome ------

The Buffalo Orienteering Club invites you to the Ellicottville Adventure Run & Hike.  This event uses a “Rogaine” format in which competitors visit as many control points as possible in a fixed amount of time. The control points are indicated in the forest by orange and white triangular flags. Just before the start, each competitor receives a topographic map with the control locations circled. Participants can choose a 3-hour time limit or a 6-hour time limit and can go as a team or individually. It’s a great format for both hardcore competitors and casual family hiking. Those seeking an additional challenge may want to consider attending an orienteering event the next day at Letchworth State Park organized by the Rochester Orienteering Club. For information visit here.

Venue and Event HQ ----------

Our event will take place in the McCarty Hill State Forest and the Rock City State Forest as well as on the property of the Holiday Valley Ski Resort. The event headquarters will be at the Ski Patrol Training Center at the Holiday Valley Resort, 6557 Holiday Valley Road, Ellicottville, NY 14731. Once on Holiday Valley Road, continue uphill past the main lodge and parking lots. The Training Center is located adjacent to the Yodeler Lodge. Check in, Day of Event registration, start, and finish will be located here.

Map ----------

Our map is drawn to orienteering standards at a scale of 1:15,000 with a contour interval of 5 meters. It was completed in the summer of 2012 by Valentine Vladimirov of Bulgaria. A portion of the map was used for this event in 2011. Copies of the competition map will not be available before the event but the WNY Mountain Biking Association does sell a more generalized map of the area featuring the bike trails at a scale of 1:20,000 with a contour interval of 20 feet. To obtain a copy of that map, contact the Ellicottville Bike Shop here.

Electronic Punching ----------

Electronic punching (SportIdent) will be used. SI cards can be rented for a fee of $2. Note that some SI cards (including the rentals) can only register 30 controls. There will be many controls in the forest so competitors must be careful not to double punch.

Special Competition Rules ----------

In the 6-hour event there will be a map exchange. There will be 23 controls on the first map. After visiting the 23 controls, or earlier if they wish, competitors will return to the Start/Finish, download their SI cards, clear and check, and then take map #2 with 17 additional controls on it. In the 3 hour event, competitors will receive a map with all 40 controls, but may only punch a maximum of 28 controls.

Other Competition Notes ----------

Water will be strategically placed in the forest and the locations will be indicated on the map. However, we can’t guarantee when or if you will pass one of those locations so you should plan to carry a reasonable amount of water with you. The area has good cell phone coverage, especially AT&T and Verizon. You may wish to carry a phone. The phone number at the Event HQ will be posted during check in.

REGISTRATION

Fees are set on a staggered scale to encourage early entries. Entry fees are the same for both events and are per participant. Persons competing as part of a team must register and pay individually.
